Tree Species In Focus

Pacific Kauri (Agathis macrophylla) is one of the largest tree species in the South-West Pacific, with individuals reaching up to 40 metres in height and 3 m bole in diameter.

Pacific Kauri (Agathis macrophylla) is one of the largest tree species in the South-West Pacific, with individuals reaching up to 40 metres in height and 3 m bole in diameter. With an estimated life span of 300 to 1000 years, they are also the longest living species. Logging and deforestation have reduced the Kauri’s area of occupancy to an “endangered” level, but its great resilience resulted in it being one of the few trees to withstand the devastating impacts ofCyclone Pam in Vanuatu. A Kauri Protected Area has been established for in situ genetic conservation of the Pacific Kauri at Erromango Island in Vanuatu. The pristine and mature Kauri tree stands within the Protected Area are a living seed bank supporting larger afforestation and ecosystem restoration with the species.
