APFORGEN played an important role in the preparation of the first-ever report on the State of The World's Forest Genetic Resources Report , published by FAO in 2014. Preparation of the report was requested by the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA) which acknowledge the urgency to conserve and sustainably utilize forest genetic resources. The SOW-FGR report followed similar status reports on plant and animal genetic resources published since 1990s.
In most of the APFORGEN member countries, National Coordinators of APFORGEN led or participated closely in the preparation of the Country's Reports for the global SOW-FGR report.
A Regional training workshop was organized in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 7 - 9 March 2011 by FAO in collaboration with APAFRI and Bioversity International, to support the preparation of the SOW-FGR Country reports in Asia from Asian countries.
In September 2012, a Regional Synthesis Workshop was organized in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the key findings and recommendations in the Country Reports; identify common achievements, constraints and action needs; and synthesize regional priorities and action needs in the conservation and management of FGR.
Several APFORGEN National Coordinators also contributed to the Global Thematic Studies prepared as part of the SOW-FGR process. The studies were subsequently developed into journal articles and published as a Special Issue in Forest Ecology and Management in December 2014.
