International Research Symposium: Asia’s Unique Forests and Trees

Join us to celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity 2025

University of the Philippines Los Baños | 20 May 2025 | In-person & Online

Celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity 2025 by joining scientists, students and experts for a discussion on the past, present and future of Asia’s forests.

Asia is home to nearly 19,000 tree species—more than any other region on Earth. These forests are vital for biodiversity, climate resilience, livelihoods, and sustainable development. Yet, many tree species are under threat from deforestation, land use change, and climate impacts.

This symposium builds on global and regional biodiversity goals and highlights the urgent need to document, conserve, and sustainably use forest and tree diversity to ensure resilient and productive ecosystems. It is jointly organized by the Asia Pacific Forest Genetic Resources Programme (APFORGEN), the College of Forestry and Natural Resources of the University of the Philippines (CFNR-UPLB), the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, and the Asia Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institutions (APAFRI), with funding support from the Republic of Korea through the National Institute of Forest Sciences (NIFoS).
