This book discusses the basic principles of handling seeds and seedlings of potential tree species for forest and landscape restoration in Indonesia. In the beginning, the characteristics of the seeds (orthodox, recalcitrant, intermediate), seed collection and processing techniques will be explained in the chapter on principles of seed handling; continued with how to make and prepare a seedbed, sowing seeds, weaning, making vegetative seeds, and maintaining seeds in the nursery will be discussed in the sowing principles chapter. The importance of species selection, land suitability and will specifically discuss how to collect seeds, handle seeds, seedbeds and nurseries of 52 tree species that have the potential for forest and landscape restoration in Indonesia in the chapter on species selection and handling of seeds and seedlings. Meanwhile, information regarding the decentralization of the seed system, the development of genetic resource areas and the certification scheme implemented by the Indonesian government (seed source certification, seed quality, and seed quality) to guarantee the quality of seeds and seedlings used in forest and land rehabilitation/restoration programs, as well as several government policies related to seed provision such as village nurseries, large-scale and permanent nurseries, and the development of seed zones will be discussed in the chapter on seed policies and actions.
This book will provide technical guidance, understanding how to handle seeds and seedlings, as well as other seed-related information. It is hoped that this book will provide knowledge, understanding and skills regarding forest plant seed technology, in order to improve the quality of seeds and seedlings used for forest and landscape restoration activities in Indonesia.
